Elon Musk, renowned for his ventures like PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX, is venturing into the artificial intelligence (AI) realm with xAI. Having previously merged xAI with SpaceX, he is now planning to construct a “TeraFab” – a massive chip manufacturing facility. Before its operational launch, Musk visited Intel’s 18A fabrication plant in Oregon to observe the creation process of future AI chips.

Months prior, Musk announced his ambitious project to build a megafactory that would produce chips for all his company’s devices, products, and services, aiming to reduce or eliminate reliance on third-party chip suppliers like NVIDIA. While he plans to build his own facility, he will still require a foundry to manufacture the wafers according to his chip designs and specifications.

Elon Musk Tours Intel’s Oregon 18A Factory for TeraFab and xAI Chips

Instead of opting for TSMC, Musk chose an unconventional path by partnering with Intel. This collaboration sees Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI becoming clients of Intel Foundry Services (IFS), marking a significant early customer for the service. This alliance is expected to secure the chips needed for Musk’s Optimus robots, satellites, and AI data centers in space, aligning with his strategic plans. The recent visit to Intel’s Oregon chip factory, a month after the IFS agreement, highlights the ongoing development of these critical components.

The Oregon facility is a cutting-edge plant responsible for producing advanced chips, including Intel’s Panther Lake processors for laptops. These chips have demonstrated significant performance gains, reportedly surpassing AMD’s APUs in graphics performance by 60% within a single generation. Intel’s resurgence is evident in its increasing revenues and substantial profits following a period of losses.

Musk Prioritizes Domestic Manufacturing Over TSMC for His TeraFab Project

Elon Musk’s TeraFab project is monumental in scale, with estimated costs ranging from $55 billion to $119 billion and a multi-year completion timeline. While the TeraFab is still in its nascent stages, Musk is actively pursuing agreements with Intel to ensure a steady supply of chips for this ambitious undertaking. Furthermore, he intends to leverage Intel’s 14A node technology for the manufacturing of next-generation AI chips for xAI.

Despite TSMC’s advanced capabilities, the foundry is currently operating at full capacity, catering to major clients like Apple, NVIDIA, and AMD, who have substantial chip demands. Moreover, Musk’s clear objective is to manufacture all his chips within the United States, making Intel the sole viable option for a domestic chip foundry.
