When Xbox launched its Series X and Series S consoles in 2020, they seemed poised for popularity and were readily available, unlike the nearly impossible-to-find PS5. However, as months and years passed, Xbox consoles did not sell particularly well. Subsequently, Sony made the PS5 widely available, and it became an absolute success. Microsoft has been displeased with these poor results, and the CEO is now pressuring Xbox to become a profitable business after so many years, suggesting this might be their last chance.
We all know there are three console companies: Nintendo, Sony, and Xbox. Despite years of competition, Nintendo typically leads in console sales, followed by Sony, with Xbox significantly trailing in third place. This has varied by console generation, but the most recent one, with the Xbox Series X/S, has not been favorable for Microsoft.
Microsoft CEO Demands Xbox Become a Sustainable Business After 25 Years of Investment
The first Xbox console, released in 2001, was not a resounding success but laid the groundwork for the brand and featured exclusive titles. The Xbox 360 was Microsoft’s biggest success, even surpassing Sony and its PS3. The One console did reasonably well, despite a rocky start, and Game Pass was well-received. In the current generation, there’s little to draw players to purchase a Series X/S, as even their games are available on PS5 and, as always, on PC. Observing the situation, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that Xbox ‘must become a profitable business after 25 years of investment‘.
It’s high time for their console and gaming division to excel and meet Microsoft’s significant demands. In fact, if their stance hasn’t changed, Microsoft expects Xbox Gaming to achieve a 30% profit margin, which will necessitate sacrifices in the form of layoffs and cutbacks.
Asha Sharma Faces a Critical Situation; Xbox ‘Reboot’ and Project Helix Must Succeed for the Brand and its Consoles to Survive
Asha Sharma, the CEO of Xbox, will be responsible for making the necessary decisions to keep Microsoft satisfied. She spoke about the ‘reboot‘ of Xbox, a plan theoretically designed to make the brand offer something distinctive and unique again, driving more sales of consoles, games, and Game Pass subscribers. This appears to be a challenging task for this CEO, who has only been in her position for about 100 days, but it’s now or never.
Satya Nadella himself has even joked that ‘YouTube monetizes games better than Xbox,’ indicating a complete change in strategy is needed. We don’t know precisely what Asha has in mind to achieve this, but Project Helix will undoubtedly be the next console, and it must not suffer the same fate as the Series X. Unfortunately, due to AI, memory and storage for Helix will be 5 times more expensive in 2027 than they would be in 2025, making it difficult to generate profits.
