Valve’s Steam Machine, initially announced alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Frame, is finally nearing its release. While the Steam Controller has already hit the market, the Steam Machine has been anticipated for months. Recent reports indicate that review units are now being dispatched, suggesting an imminent launch and the imminent revelation of its price.
Building on the success of the Steam Deck, which debuted in 2022, Valve aims to replicate its achievements with the Steam Machine. The Steam Deck demonstrated the viability of more affordable, Linux-based handheld consoles, with SteamOS and Proton proving instrumental in achieving strong gaming performance while consuming fewer resources than Windows. The Steam Machine is expected to follow a similar path, utilizing SteamOS and relatively cost-effective hardware that still delivers robust gaming capabilities with good graphics and frame rates.
However, the current market conditions, marked by high prices for RAM, SSDs, and GPUs, could impact the Steam Machine’s affordability. Despite these challenges, the launch appears to be drawing near. Following unconfirmed welcome messages for the PC/console hybrid in late May, the news of review unit shipments signals a product close to release. While the exact timeline for reviews remains uncertain, and dependent on Valve’s embargo, potential release windows are emerging.
Whispers from the unofficial ‘Steam Hardware Updates’ X account suggest that the review embargo could lift around June 23rd, with pricing and reservation details becoming available between June 22nd and June 30th. It’s important to note that this information is not officially confirmed by Valve, who have yet to release any concrete pricing or launch date figures.
Valve previously stated that the Steam Machine’s launch would be delayed compared to the Steam Controller due to market and pricing concerns. They also indicated a summer release alongside the Steam Frame. While June is a possibility, an August launch remains within the realm of speculation until official confirmation from Valve.
