Samsung is extending its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities beyond smartphones and wearables to its Bespoke AI refrigerators. The company has rolled out a significant software update designed to make these appliances considerably smarter. Equipped with dedicated hardware, these refrigerators can now run sophisticated AI software, including the Google Gemini AI model, in addition to other cloud-based AI models within the AI Vision ecosystem.

This update dramatically improves the food recognition system, enhances the automation of shopping lists, offers recipe recommendations based on the contents of the fridge, and simplifies technical diagnostics for the appliance itself. Previously, Samsung’s system could identify a limited range of items, around 60 fresh produce items and about 50 packaged goods, which proved insufficient for a fully stocked refrigerator with diverse brands and products. Post-update, the recognition capability has surged to over 2,000 items, combining on-device detection with cloud intelligence. Consequently, the refrigerator requires a Wi-Fi connection to leverage its full potential.

Samsung Bespoke AI Fridges Can Now Recognize Almost All Stored Food

This advancement is crucial as it addresses a major drawback of smart refrigerators: the need for users to manually input data. Before this update, even if the system recognized an item, users often had to correct quantities, dates, or newly added products. Initial tests after the update indicate that the refrigerator now better identifies specific brands, differentiates between similar products (e.g., various Coca-Cola variants), and accurately counts multiple units of the same item. It also records when an item was added and can alert users when something is nearing its expiration date.

The AI Food Manager function becomes substantially more practical with these enhancements. It moves beyond simply cataloging fridge contents to building a comprehensive household food database: tracking incoming items, frequently consumed products, items that tend to run out, and recipes that can be prepared with available ingredients. Samsung also states that the system can alert users to replenish frequently consumed items, aiming to simplify shopping planning and reduce food waste.

Another notable development is the evolution of Samsung’s Bixby AI. While Gemini operates in the background, Bixby remains the user-facing assistant. The update enables more natural interactions, allowing users to request temperature adjustments, ice modes, water filter information, or troubleshooting assistance without rigid commands.

The Refrigerator Also Features Predictive Maintenance and AI Technical Support

Samsung Bespoke AI refrigerators are equipped with Reliability AI, a layer focused on predictive maintenance and technical support. This system can monitor components, detect issues before they escalate, and provide data to support agents. For instance, if an ice maker produces clumped ice cubes, technical service could remotely adjust the water flow to the tray without requiring an on-site technician visit. Samsung assures that repair personnel’s access to this data requires explicit consent from the owner.

Naturally, as with any AI, refrigerators can experience ‘hallucinations’ or misinterpret objects. In one test, the system mistook a colored bandage for a vegetable. This highlights that the technology is still evolving but is significantly more useful than before.

The update for Samsung Bespoke AI refrigerators comes with certain limitations. Samsung acknowledges that Wi-Fi and a Samsung account for AI Vision are necessary, that unrecognized foods may appear as “unknown,” that the system does not identify products in the freezer, and that users might still need to review and manually correct the shopping list. This update is rolling out starting today in the United States and will be progressively expanded to models with the 9-inch AI Home screen and other markets throughout 2026. Concerns about privacy are also present, as users are sharing their dietary habits with the company, which could potentially be used for personalized advertising on the refrigerators in the future.
