In our hyper-connected world, distractions abound. Smartphones, computers, and tablets are ever-present, constantly vying for our attention. For those seeking to focus on the fundamental act of writing without the digital noise, the Zerowriter Fold emerges as an ideal companion. Featuring an e-ink screen akin to a Kindle, it offers a visually comfortable experience and is deliberately devoid of AI and internet connectivity.

Before the advent of the internet and computers, writing was primarily a manual or typewriter-driven process. This era offered a stark contrast to today’s digital landscape, free from the incessant notifications from apps, social media, missed calls, daily emails, or the temptation of getting lost online for hours.

Zerowriter Fold: A 6-inch E-Ink Typewriter for Focused Drafting, Offline and AI-Free

The ultimate goal when working, completing tasks, or simply striving for productivity is to achieve a state of “flow.” This is a state of deep concentration and immersion in an activity, allowing us to unlock our full potential. This flow state can be experienced in any pursuit, not just work, extending to being engrossed in a TV series or a video game and losing track of time. Achieving this state is increasingly challenging, but devices like the Zerowriter Fold simplify the process for those who enjoy writing.

The Zerowriter Fold can be described as a modern typewriter equipped with a 6-inch e-ink display. This screen consumes minimal power and is gentle on the eyes. While e-ink screens are not ideal for dynamic content like videos or gaming due to their low refresh rates, they excel with static content, making them perfect for reading and, in this case, writing. This e-ink technology contributes to an impressive battery life, lasting between 50 to 100 hours of continuous writing. Its compact dimensions are 30.48 cm x 12.7 cm x 3.2 cm, and it weighs less than 900 grams.

Draft and Word Processor Modes, Priced Around €200, Launching in 2027

True to its name, the Zerowriter Fold is foldable, resembling a compact laptop. However, it’s not a computer; it lacks an operating system and conventional software. It also offers no internet access or AI capabilities. It can be viewed as an “analog” device reminiscent of those from decades past, offering simplicity with two modes: a draft mode and a word processor mode. In the draft mode, users can jot down any idea that comes to mind.

The word processor mode allows for editing and revising texts and documents, including copy, paste, cut, and delete functions. It supports plain text files, Word, Google Docs, Pages, and more. All work is saved to a micro-SD card, and the device also includes a small amount of internal storage. For comfortable typing, it features small legs that elevate it to a more ergonomic writing position. The keyboard is a 61-key low-profile mechanical keyboard in a 60% layout.

It comes with pre-installed Kailh Choc Pro Red switches that require minimal actuation force. These can be hot-swapped with other switches such as Sunset Tactile or Ambient Silents. The price is €206 for Kickstarter reservations, with expected delivery in January 2027, so there is still a wait.
