ELECOM has announced the re-release of its iconic EGG MOUSE, a quirky, egg-shaped peripheral celebrating its 40th anniversary. Originally launched in 1988, a time when most mice sported a more rectangular design, this relaunched model pays homage to a design that helped popularize more ergonomic and hand-friendly mice. The new version is set to launch in Japan in mid-July, priced at 4,980 yen, approximately 29 euros.

ELECOM’s intention with this release is not to create a high-performance gaming mouse, but rather to revive a historic design and update it for modern daily use. The company describes the product as embodying the Japanese concept of “絵になる、まいにちを。” (Enishiru, Mainichi wo), which translates to making everyday life more visual or aesthetic. This means the mouse is designed not just as a functional tool, but also as a stylish object that can complement a workspace.

The ELECOM EGG MOUSE: A Look at its 40th Anniversary Design

A key feature of the new ELECOM EGG MOUSE is its interchangeable silicone covers, referred to as ‘Soft Shells’. Each mouse comes with two covers in different colors, which can be fitted onto the mouse body. These covers not only alter the device’s appearance but also enhance grip and protect the mouse from scratches, impacts, and dirt.

Beyond the covers, the mouse will be available in five base colors: black, white, teal, coral pink, and yellow. Depending on the chosen color, ELECOM includes different combinations of Soft Shells. For instance, the black version comes with a navy blue cover, white with beige, teal with mint, coral pink with pink, and yellow with gray. This offers users the flexibility to create up to ten distinct visual combinations from five base models.

Technically, the EGG MOUSE is a straightforward Bluetooth mouse. It utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy, allowing it to pair with up to three devices and switch between them using a dedicated selector. This feature makes it particularly useful for users who frequently switch between devices like PCs, laptops, tablets, or even smartphones. The mouse also features quiet click buttons, emphasizing its focus on a seamless and unobtrusive user experience.

Specifications of the Curious ELECOM EGG MOUSE

In terms of specifications, the ELECOM EGG MOUSE is equipped with four buttons: left click, right click, a scroll wheel, and a customizable function button. By default, this function button is set to “back” for web browsing, but it can be remapped using compatible software for Windows and macOS. Internally, it houses a basic BlueLED sensor with a fixed resolution of 1000 DPI. This sensor is adequate for office tasks and general navigation, though it might be less suitable for users with large, high-resolution monitors or for gaming purposes. The sensor is designed to work reliably on a variety of surfaces, including wood, resin, and glass.

Dimensions of the ELECOM EGG MOUSE are approximately 53 x 70 x 46 mm without a cover, and 55 x 71 x 47 mm with its Soft Shell. Its weight is around 40 grams without the cover and 50 grams with the cover (excluding the battery). The mouse is powered by a single AAA battery, with ELECOM estimating an autonomy of up to 12 months on a single alkaline battery. The device is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS (version 26), iPadOS (version 26), ChromeOS, and Android (version 16).
