Millions of players worldwide eagerly await the arrival of GTA VI on November 19, 2026, having waited since GTA V’s release in 2013 for its successor. This has been over a decade of rumors, leaks, and finally, reality, as the official trailer was revealed in 2024, confirming the game’s existence. Unfortunately, there have been few substantial leaks of the game beyond what was seen a couple of years ago, leaving much to speculation. However, the current theory might not be far off, as players believe a GTA VI car theft feature has been leaked in GTA Online, following the revelation of a mechanic involving a vehicle’s VIN.
The first major, and practically only, leak of GTA VI came from a minor hacker who managed to obtain dozens of early development videos. These showed very basic elements such as characters walking, shooting, or entering city shops. We also saw the two protagonists who will star in this story, later confirmed in Rockstar Games’ future trailers. The hacker, despite being only 17, did not escape consequences and is currently imprisoned. He himself warned that GTA VI’s source code could be leaked.
VIN Function Found in GTA V Online, Believed to Be a GTA 6 Leak for a New Car Theft System
While we haven’t seen any of the game’s source code, we do have something related. A player posted on Reddit about something they found in GTA Online, believing it to be a fragment of GTA VI code that developers accidentally left behind. This is because they found a message in the description of the customizable windshields of a specific car, the Coquette D10 supercar:
“The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique code used to identify individual vehicles. This has now been removed from the vehicle.”
GTA Online does not register or use the VIN of cars for any purpose. Therefore, the player believes this is a mechanic reserved for GTA VI, which will be involved in a much more complex car theft system that utilizes identification numbers. Interestingly, the Coquette D10 chase version and the Tigon did not display this message, nor did any other vehicles.
Some Believe It’s a GTA V Feature, While Others Think It’s Likely from GTA VI, Citing Rockstar’s Past Error of Including GTA V Files in Max Payne 3
The player attempted to purchase a new Coquette D10, but it also did not display the specific message. It appears to have only worked for the D10 they acquired from the scrapyard the previous week. They assume it was a bug that very few people would have seen or noticed, given its specific occurrence. In fact, Reddit comments do not show similar cases being discussed. In any case, some believe this has no relation to GTA VI and was simply a feature they intended to add to GTA V or GTA Online at some point but never did.
Others are more hopeful that this is a leak from the upcoming game, pointing to how Rockstar included GTA V files in Max Payne 3. Now, all that remains is to wait and see if these theories prove to be reality, although there are still nearly six months until the game’s launch.
