NVIDIA’s initial foray into DLSS years ago didn’t spark immense optimism, with early graphical results being unexceptional. However, the technology began to transform with DLSS 2 and has since evolved to a point where DLSS 4.5 can offer upscaling superior to native resolution. NVIDIA’s subsequent announcement of DLSS 5, intended as a shift from upscaling to something more akin to an ‘AI filter,’ drew significant criticism. Despite the negative reception, it appears NVIDIA has discreetly integrated DLSS 5 into its latest 610.47 drivers, labeled as DLSS-NR (DLSS Neural Rendering), though it remains currently unactivatable.

DLSS 5’s announcement was met with surprise, as the company seemed to be moving away from its successful upscaling technology towards what initially appeared to be a simple ‘AI filter.’ However, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has consistently maintained that DLSS 5 is far more complex than a mere filter. He emphasized its customizable nature, allowing studio artists to control and adjust its intensity and detail levels in real-time.

NVIDIA Integrates DLSS-NR (DLSS 5) into Drivers 610.47, Removes Control Panel

Despite initial skepticism surrounding DLSS 5, some studios, such as Capcom, have voiced support for the technology, suggesting that with further refinement and full control, it could usher in a new era of graphics. While its current appearance leans towards an artificial aesthetic, its evolution and implementation will be key to assessing its true potential. Although an official release date for DLSS 5 is unknown, a ‘partial implementation’ has been discovered in the GeForce 610.47 WHQL drivers in the form of DLSS-NR.

This discovery was made using NVIDIA Profile Inspector, where selecting the latest driver profile reveals options such as ‘Enable DLSS NR override,’ ‘Enable DLSS NR SL Override,’ and ‘Override DLSS NR presets.’ These options are associated with DLSS-NR, DLSS-NR Streamline, and DLSS-NR Presets, confirming NVIDIA’s commencement of integrating this technology into its drivers. An additional noteworthy change in these drivers is the removal of the traditional NVIDIA Control Panel; all management will now be handled through NVIDIA’s App.

DLSS 5 Activation Awaits NVIDIA’s File Release

While NVIDIA Profile Inspector allows for the toggling of various settings, activating DLSS-NR is not yet possible, as NVIDIA has not released the necessary DLSS 5 files. Consequently, any attempts to enable it will likely yield no visible results. The upcoming COMPUTEX 2026 trade show in Taiwan could potentially host NVIDIA’s reveal of new technologies.

Rumors suggest that NVIDIA may unveil the NVIDIA N1X chip at COMPUTEX, an ‘APU’ for laptops developed in partnership with MediaTek, which will provide the CPU while NVIDIA handles the GPU. While nothing is confirmed regarding DLSS 5, its presence in the latest drivers hints at a potential announcement soon, and COMPUTEX, being a major global tech event, offers a likely platform for such a reveal.
