Preview Plex Triples Lifetime Subscription Price to €749.99

Plex has announced a significant and aggressive price hike for its one-time payment Plex Pass Lifetime subscription. Effective July 1, 2026, the price of the new lifetime pass will triple, increasing from €249.99 to €749.99. While Plex is not eliminating this option, it is making it considerably less accessible for new users.

The company justifies this move by stating they had considered completely removing the lifetime plan, as recurring subscriptions are more sustainable for long-term development. However, they claim to be keeping the Plex Pass Lifetime because it remains a valued option within the community. The new price, according to Plex, better reflects the ongoing and real value of the software.

Plex Already Implemented Significant Price Increases in 2025

The price increase for Plex’s lifetime pass is quite notable, especially since the company had already substantially raised its subscription rates in 2025. Specifically, the monthly Plex Pass increased to €5.99 (or $6.99), the annual pass rose to €59.99 (or $69.99), and the lifetime pass to its current €249.99. In Plex’s defense, these prices had seen minimal changes for over a decade. Prior to the 2025 increase, the lifetime subscription was priced at €119.99. Therefore, in just over a year, Plex will have increased the cost of lifetime access from €119.99 to €749.99, making it six times more expensive.

For existing users with a Plex Pass Lifetime, nothing will change. Plex assures that all current owners will retain their benefits and advantages associated with their Plex Pass. The monthly and annual Plex Pass rates, as well as the Remote Watch Pass, will also remain unchanged, at least according to this announcement. Users considering purchasing or upgrading to the Lifetime plan can still do so at the current price of €249.99 until July 1, 2026.

The Plex Pass Lifetime will thus shift from being an impulse buy for advanced users to becoming a very long-term investment. At the current price of €249.99, it takes approximately 4 years and 12 months to break even compared to the annual plan of €59.99. With the new price of €749.99, the break-even period extends to about 12 years and 6 months. Compared to the monthly plan of €5.99, the new Lifetime pass would take almost 10 years and 5 months to pay for itself. In essence, Plex is clearly pushing users towards recurring payments.

Okay, It Costs More Now, But… What Exactly Is Plex?

Plex is a multimedia platform that allows you to transform your computer, NAS, or home server into a personal streaming hub. The core idea is that you store your own movies, series, music, or photos on a device. Plex then organizes this content with cover art, descriptions, season details, cast information, genres, and other metadata. Subsequently, you can access this library from a Plex app on a Smart TV, mobile phone, tablet, console, web browser, or devices like Chromecast/Apple TV from anywhere in the world. Essentially, you can create your own streaming platform, provided the device hosting the content remains powered on.

Furthermore, if the playback device doesn’t fully support the original file format, Plex can perform transcoding, converting the video in real-time to a compatible format. In practical terms, Plex is widely used by individuals with large collections of movies, series, or music who desire a comfortable, visually appealing, and centralized interface, similar to Netflix, but with your own content. Plex also offers free content with ads, live channels, and online features, though for many long-time users, the primary draw remains personal library management.

The Plex Pass, in any of its variations, is the premium subscription. It unlocks features such as hardware transcoding, offline downloads, and skipping intros and credits. You also gain access to family features, music enhancements with Plexamp, and advanced server options. This is why the price increase for the lifetime plan primarily affects advanced users who utilize Plex as their permanent home multimedia infrastructure.
