Preview ShadPS4 Emulator is Developing PSN-Free Multiplayer

ShadPS4, a leading PlayStation 4 emulator for PC, has announced a significant development with the introduction of ShadNet. This proprietary online server system aims to allow players to connect with each other without requiring PlayStation Network or a PlayStation Plus subscription. The ShadPS4 development team intends to establish an alternative infrastructure to support online functionalities for compatible games within the emulator, much like RPCN does for PlayStation 3 emulation in RPCS3.

While the announcement focuses on online play, ShadNet is currently in its testing phase with limited functionality. The ShadPS4 team has stated that, for now, only score tracking is operational, and direct account data input via shadQtLauncher is not yet possible. This means a fully functional online multiplayer experience for PS4 games is not yet available. Instead, this represents the foundational step towards an infrastructure that could enable it in the future. It’s also worth noting that the ShadPS4 emulator itself is still in its early stages and cannot yet run PS4 games on PC.

ShadNet Aims to Be Ready for ShadPS4’s Mature Development Stage

The emulation of PS4 games on PC, including by ShadPS4, is still in its nascent stages compared to more established projects like RPCS3. ShadPS4 has made considerable progress over the past year and can now launch some popular titles. However, the project developers caution that many games still do not function correctly. Even when games do launch, they may suffer from emulation errors, graphical glitches, audio issues, performance problems, or instability.

The introduction of ShadNet follows closely behind the release of shadPS4 v0.16.0, which its developers have described as the emulator’s most significant update to date. This version brought substantial improvements in emulation accuracy, graphics, audio, input handling, user experience, platform support, and development infrastructure. Notable features included a new configuration system, initial OpenAL support, camera emulation, local multiplayer, Big Picture mode, screenshot functionality, and advancements in its HTTP library.

The progress in HTTP and networking functions is particularly relevant, as it appears to be laying the groundwork for ShadNet’s adoption. Version 0.16.0 already incorporated enhancements to the PS4’s network stack and compatibility with games or applications relying on online communication APIs. ShadNet is thus a logical progression of this work. The strategy is to first bolster the emulator’s networking foundation and then build a custom server infrastructure to enable online features. This will not only benefit games heavily reliant on multiplayer but also reduce dependence on official PlayStation services when gaming on PC.
