AMD’s RX 9000 series graphics cards, launched in March 2025, arrived later than NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series but managed to capture gamers’ attention in the mid-to-high range segment. Among these, the RX 9070 XT stood out as particularly popular, boasting 16 GB of VRAM, superior performance to the RTX 5070 Ti, and a price tag of around 700 euros. While the RX 9070 sold reasonably well, the newer RX 9070 GRE, released a couple of weeks ago, has been a complete flop. It has now finally been listed on the German store Mindfactory, having sold a meager “more than 5 units.”
AMD has struggled for several generations to gain significant traction in the graphics card market. For instance, the RX 5000 series had limited models and couldn’t compete effectively against NVIDIA. The RX 6000 series, despite a wider range of models, also failed to reach its competitor. The RX 7000 series managed to enter the high-end segment with competitive pricing, but consumer confidence remained somewhat shaky. It wasn’t until the RX 9000 series, specifically the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, that AMD graphics cards finally saw a resurgence in sales.
The RX 9070 GRE Finally Appears Listed at German Retailer Mindfactory After Barely Clearing Minimum Sales Threshold
One might expect a card like the RX 9070 GRE to perform comparably to its siblings in terms of sales. After all, it’s positioned as a more ‘affordable‘ model, similar to the RX 7900 GRE. However, unlike its predecessor, the performance-to-cost ratio hasn’t panned out favorably. This graphics card retails between 560 and 600 euros. The issue is that while it offers a saving of 60-70 euros, it delivers 20% to 40% less performance than an RX 9070. This positions it even below the previous generation’s RX 7900 GRE, a fact that gamers are well aware of. Consequently, it experienced virtually no sales upon its debut at Mindfactory, and after two weeks, its appearance is marked by disappointing numbers.
We’re talking about ‘more than 5‘ RX 9070 GRE units sold. Some customers likely purchased it because it was cheaper than the RX 9070 without thorough research, or perhaps they were desperate for a new graphics card and it fit their budget. This dismal performance isn’t confined to a single model; both the Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 GRE Pulse OC and the XFX Radeon RX 9070 GRE White have reportedly sold over 5 units each, bringing the total to over 10 – a truly remarkable achievement.
AMD Initially Launched the RX 9070 GRE Exclusively in China Before Bringing It to the West
Despite the few units sold at Mindfactory, these sales figures confirm the card’s status as a complete failure. It’s important to note that PC users and gamers increasingly rely on reviews and quick comparisons from tech websites or their favorite YouTubers. Attempting to sell hardware that is inferior and worse performing than other options at a high price might have worked decades ago, but it’s unlikely to succeed today, especially for graphics cards that aren’t from NVIDIA. As we know, NVIDIA can successfully sell even graphics cards with inflated prices far above their MSRP.
The RX 9070 GRE was initially launched exclusively in China. If it had remained there, AMD’s situation wouldn’t have changed significantly. However, making it available in Europe and other countries adds to the limited range of RX 9000 series graphics cards. Rumors suggest that AMD might be planning to release a graphics card more powerful than the RX 9070 XT with 32 GB of VRAM to compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 50 SUPER series, but this is considered unlikely.
